Bush Drops $2.9 Trillion Dollar Budget On The Public

Bush dropped a new $2.9 trillion dollar budget on the public today, with more money proposed for the twin wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and 141 programs, many for the poor facing sharp cutbacks or elimination altogether.

Iraq and Afghanistan will see another $97 billion this year in the new Bush budget, which comes on top of the $70 billion already approved by congress for this year. In 2008, another $141 to $145 billion are proposed for these twin wars.

The Bush budget seeks $78 billion in Medicare and Medicaid cuts to the nation's poor and elderly, while seeking make permanent tax cuts that mainly benefit the wealthy.

Prisons and other tough on crime, "lock 'em up" proposals see more funding increases, while prevention programs such as community policing have seen sharp cutbacks or even elimination during the Bush presidency.

Probably many aspects of this budget proposal are DOA on arrival to congress. Yet with the razor slim Democratic majority in the Senate, and some more conservative leaning Democrats, no bets should be off on what is finally allowed by this congress.
