Palin Family Sadly Seeks More Publicity From Dumb David Letterman Joke
This week, David Letterman told a silly little joke about the Palin family attending a New York Yankees baseball game, that simply went like this: " One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee Game, during the Seventh inning, her daughter was knocked up by Alex Rodriguez". Not much of a joke. And stupid indeed. But the Palin family and some of their right wing supporters just couldn't avoid using the opportunity to issue statements claiming that Letterman was encouraging rape against 14 year old Willow Palin or other awful claims. An outrageous reaction indeed.
It was also very regrettable that a LOS ANGELES TIMES column by writer Andrew Malcolm, used an old file photo of Letterman with a beard while he was supporting the writers strike, to write a smear piece of journalism against Letterman attempting to paint him as some dirty old man type. Letterman has told many stupid jokes about Alex Rodriguez before, however the controversy that some like Malcolm are generating about this stupid joke just don't rise to the level of any actual offense. This is a phony generated offense on the part of some Palin supporters just for the sake of publicity.
Letterman probably also didn't help himself much with a very clumsy apology to the Palin family claiming that he meant their 18 year old daughter, not the 14 year old one. That clumsy apology only helped to feed the insatiable media appetite of the Palins to use any news to generate more publicity. Just like Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, no publicity opportunity is too bad for the Palins to miss.
The fact of the matter is that the petty media world of Sarah Palin simply doesn't benefit from continually milking the unwed pregnancy story of her daughter as her greatest campaign issue. Sarah Palin only continues to marginalize herself as a serious politician, with only fringe candidate appeal by continuing to remind most voters that she was unable to manage the life of her daughter not to wreck her life with her unwed pregnancy. Someone hardly able to better control her daughter seems well beyond the ability to resolve the economy, bring peace to the Mideast, prevent North Korea or Iran from Nuclear mischief, or resolve other major issues.
Sarah Palin may love publicity, even bad publicity. But the silly attempt to remind voters of her inability to prevent the unwed pregnancy of her teenage daughter by making a silly joke by David Letterman into some major campaign issue is simply pathetic. Compared to the actual joke that Letterman told, which really didn't amount to very much at all, any further statements by the Palins only work to marginalize Sarah Palin as a complete kook and nut job candidate. That's no road to the White House by any means.
