Who Would Jesus Bomb?

I saw a bumper sticker on a car a few days ago. It read, "Who Would Jesus Bomb?". It raised a very thoughtful question as I drove and brough tears to my eyes.

The best way to answer this question is to say who was Jesus. He was a Jewish carpenter who became a Rabbi, but as a mere child amazed many religious scholars of his day with his wisdom. One day he even expressed a bit of humor, when he told some that they see a "speck" in the eye of others, but fail to see the "log" in their own eye. The religious right should look into this mirror and see if their own face isn't in this statement by the Son Of God.

Jesus healed the sick. He even raised up the dead. He gave sermons so awesome that he is loyally followed today by millions of faithful who trust in his life affirming messages and love for man.

Today we have a president and many members of congress who claim to have a prayer life or to follow Jesus. But their actions often don't have enough of Jesus in them to at all reflect his character, love for man , wisdom and nature.

Instead we have elective wars like Iraq, where children and civilians are daily targets of violence. There were peaceful ways to take down Saddam Hussein, with the world court system or other means. Instead the destructive path of war has led to no peace for many of the Iraqi people. And some American military contractors have been the only real winners of this elective war. America has simply made this country unstable and a killing field. Where is the nature of Jesus in this?

Perhaps someday the violence in Iraq will settle down. But for today, life is sheer misery for many Iraqis, with daily violence and shortages of electric power to even cook or keep food at home. And children are often victims of this daily immoral cycle of violence. Who would Jesus bomb indeed?
